Pepper grows as berries on the tropical pepper plant, Piper nigrum. Black pepper is made from the unripe harvested berries that when dried are between brown and black. After that is the pepper broken into pieces of approximately 1.2 to 2 mm. Black pepper is hotter and more aromatic in taste than white pepper.
